About us
A timeless stay in the heart of England’s smallest city
The White Hart has been welcoming guests for over 500 years, travellers, traders, and curious visitors alike. Today, it remains a place to rest, dine, and unwind in comfort, where history and modern warmth sit side by side.
A place with history
The White Hart has been part of Wells for more than five centuries. Built in the 15th century as a coaching inn, it offered rest and refreshment to travellers and pilgrims bound for the cathedral. That same spirit of welcome remains at the heart of what we do today.
Step inside and you will find a blend of historic character and modern comfort. Original stonework and timber beams sit alongside relaxed spaces to eat and drink, with seasonal menus that celebrate Somerset producers and a bar that pours favourite local ales and wines. Each of our rooms is full of character and thoughtfully updated with everything you need for a restful stay.
With Wells Cathedral and the market square on the doorstep, The White Hart is a perfect base for exploring England’s smallest city and the Somerset countryside beyond. We are a dog friendly pub and hotel, so your four legged friends are welcome to join you for food, drinks, and an overnight stay. We also have Sir Woofchester treats for well behaved pups.
Children are welcome until 9 p.m. with a kids menu and activities to keep them entertained.
